Knoevenagel condensation occurs with aromatic aldehydes. Attempted hydrolysis with base results in reversal of the condensation reaction, but decarboethoxylation can be achieved by treatment with LiI in DMF, providing a useful synthesis of arylvinyl methyl sulfones: Synthesis, 806 (1980).
